“Eric Pelka: 90s NYC to Rural Western Massachusetts” features dozens of paintings and drawings in an elaborate installation at the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery at Springfield Technical Community College on view through Nov. 9.
Two events are planned on Tuesday, Oct. 29: a meet and greet reception 9:45 a.m.-11:15 a.m. and an evening celebration 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Pelka moved to New York City as a young adult, where he spent 25 years creating artwork. In 2016 he made a move to Western Massachusetts, drawn by the beauty of the region’s land and culture, which continue to inspire his newer paintings.
Pelka’s artworks often reflect his direct environment and experience and serve as tangible vignettes of dream-like sequences. Pelka also views his artwork as a vehicle to express the intangible aspects of emotion.
Influenced by unexpected feelings of both the conscious and subconscious mind, his artistic process involves layering diverse materials – including acrylic and oil paints, ink, pastel, marker, and pencil – onto canvas, paper, wood, glass, and collage. Pelka’s work has been exhibited in Italy, Japan, and across the United States, and featured in private collections around the globe.
The exhibition is supported in part by the School of Liberal and Professional Studies and the Fine Arts department.
The Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or by appointment. The gallery is open to the public and there is no charge to view the exhibitions.
